Privacy Policy Version 1.0

Effective Date: June 2, 2010

Introduction

The website www.starvedforattention.org is operated by Médecins Sans Frontières USA (“MSF USA”).   By visiting this website or providing us with information through this website, you accept the practices described in this Privacy Policy. You also accept the specific rules or terms of use which may be posted on specific sections of the website.   MSF USA may change these terms and conditions from time to time without prior notification, so please consult these terms and conditions regularly for any such changes. Of course, changes in policy will not affect data entered under an older version of this policy.

We are strongly committed to protecting your privacy online.  The following information will help you better understand what information we gather from our site and how we handle the information once we collect it.  This policy will tell you if we disclose that information to anyone and what choices you have regarding how we use that information.  Please note that this Privacy Policy applies only to www.starvedforattention.org and not to the websites of any other organizations to which we may link or that may link to us.  This Privacy Policy also does not apply to any offline contact between you and MSF USA.

Personally Identifiable Information

If you opt-in on our website to get updates, MSF USA will record and use your e-mail address for such purposes.  If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from our email list, you may do so by contacting unsubscribe@starvedforattention.org with the subject heading “Unsubscribe”.

We do not share the information you’ve given us with unaffiliated groups without your explicit permission. We may share some of your personal information with the following affiliated groups:

* Affiliated Third Parties – for example, other MSF section and our database administrators – for the sole purpose of helping us do our work. These groups do not share your personal information or use it for any purpose other than as instructed by us.

* Third Party Administrators, such as organizations we engage to facilitate large distribution of messages. The content of these emails will be from MSF and these third parties do not have direct access to your personally identifiable information.

In addition, with your explicit permission, we pass along certain of your information to world leaders and policy makers when you sign petitions.

When you give MSF USA personal information, we take steps to ensure that your information is treated securely. Unfortunately, no data transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we strive to protect your personal information, MSF USA cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us, and you do so at your own risk.

We will not provide personally identifiable information to any other persons, except if we are required to make disclosures to the government or private parties in connection with a lawsuit, subpoena, investigation or similar proceeding.  For example, where we determine that members may be misusing our systems for malicious purposes such as by using the numbers we provide to make harassing phone calls, such activities may be reported to law enforcement agencies.  We can (and you authorize us to) disclose any such personally identifiable information in those circumstances.

Petitions and Surveys

For petitions or surveys you've signed or completed, we treat your name, country, and comments as public information—for example, we may provide compilations of petitions, with your comments, to world leaders and policy makers. This is a standard industry practice.  In no such case will we disclose your email address without your permission.  MSF USA is not responsible for the use of your email address by campaign targets.

Children

We are concerned about the safety and privacy of children who use the Internet.  Although we encourage children to learn more about our organization and opportunities to serve their communities, we encourage this be done with parental supervision.  Consistent with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (“COPPA”), we will never knowingly request personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 13 without prior verifiable parent consent.  If we become aware that a child under 13 has otherwise provided us with personally identifiable information without verifiable parent consent, we will use our best efforts to remove such information from our files.  If a parent or guardian becomes aware that his or her child has provided us with personally identifiable information without verifiable parent consent, he or she should contact Nicole Nummelin, 333 7th Avenue, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10001-5004, fax: 212-679-7016, phone: 212-679-6800, info@doctorswithoutborders.org.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files that a site transfers to a site visitor's hard disk or browser for added functionality, or for tracking site usage. MSF USA uses cookies in a limited capacity. Our cookies do not capture or store any personally identifying information about you, or any data about your past usage of our site. We use information captured by cookies only for blind statistical analysis, and to tailor our communications with the public. You can configure your browser to accept all cookies, reject all cookies, or notify you when a cookie is set. (Each browser is different, so check the “Help” menu of your browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences).

Data Tracking

In order to better serve our members, we use cookies and periodically analyze web logs. We may collect IP addresses to better understand where our traffic is coming from, and to provide customized services to members. We may also use third-party services such as Google Analytics. This helps us understand traffic patterns and know if there are problems with our website. We may also use embedded images in emails to track open rates for our mailings, so that we can tell which mailings appeal most to MSF members.

URLs contained in emails may contain an ID that enables us to correctly identify the person who takes an action using a web page. We use these URLs to simplify the process of signing petitions and filling out surveys. We may occasionally present a shortened URL that references a longer URL which contains an ID—we do this to simplify the display, to prevent links from becoming broken when copied, and to ensure compatibility with email programs which do not handle long URLs. When a shortened URL is displayed in an email, you will see the full URL in the browser's address bar when you access the page.
